Everest region is home to the famous Sherpas, an ethnic group that has achieved fame from exploits of its men on mountaineering expeditions. Khumbu, the northern half of this region, includes the highest mountain of the world and three other 8000-m (26247 ft) summits, all part of Sagarmatha National Park. Sagarmatha National Park (1148 s km), a World Heritage Site situated in the Solu-Khumbu district in the northeast. The park is an easy place to see high altitude species, such as Himalayan monal and Tibetan snow cock.
The attractions of Everest region are the majestic mountains, the villages in the high mountain valleys, the associated monasteries, and the legendary inhabitants. The area is the second most popular trekking area in Nepal. Choices in travel to and from Khumbu include walking from Jiri near Kathmandu, or flying from Kathmandu to Lukla, an airstrip located 1 to 2 days south of Namche Bazaar, the entrance to Everest region in Khumbu valley.
Minimum 10 days is the time we would recommend spending in Khumbu if your gole is the foot of Everest. There are several possible ways of reaching the Solu-Khumbu. If you walk from Jiri and fly back from Lukla, the entire trip takes 3 to 4 weeks of time. Walking to and from Khumbu makes that part of the trip almost wo weeks. Many trekkers find the walk to Khumbu from Jiri better than the destination itself. Those with less time can fly to Lukla from Kathmandu and stay at lower villages of Khumbu. Other approaches to Khumbu on foot include walking to Rolwaling, either from Barabise on the Kathmandu-Kodari road or from Charikot on the Lamosangu-Jiri road and crossing Tashi Labsta Pass. Another attractive route is to walk to or from the southeast and the Arun drainage. Also you can enter and leave from the Tarai.
Treks in the Everest region take you to the very core of the Himalayas, to where the mountain is at its lofiest. While you can spend whole month and more walking in the Everest region, the popular basic trek, from Lukla (reached by air from Kathmandu) to Kala Patthar, typically takes 15 days. Affording the best views of Mt. Everest from Nepal, Kala Patthar is a rocky hill with an elevation of 5545m/ 18192 ft.
